Branding Your Blog and Yourself

It's early in the morning, and I can't sleep, so I'm surfing the Internet and came upon this article about how to brand your blog.  I don't know that I've necessarily put a lot of effort into branding here, but thinking about this reminded me of one of my experiences as a trial lawyer.

As a defense attorney, I had more than one trial against a certain prosecutor, who always asked the same question to every juror during jury selection:

"If you had to describe yourself in one word, what single word would you choose?:

This question always annoyed me because about half of the potential jurors couldn't come up with one word answers, and I am not sure that the answers they gave really told us anything about the type of people that they are.  More often than not, I think the answer was simply politically correct or what the potential juror thought that the prosecutor wanted to hear.

During this part of his jury selection, I'd often think of words that applied to him.  He was a married man who flirted too much, liked to tell inappropriate stories at work, and he mispronounced his own last name because he didn't have the nerve to tell everyone that they were pronouncing it incorrectly.  As you can tell, he spent a lot of time on jury selection that didn't always yield helpful information, which gave me a lot of time to think.

So one day Mr. Prosecutor came up to me and asked what my word was.  I thought for a while and told him, "Spiritual."  He looked shocked and never talked to me after that.  I do consider myself to be very spiritual, and I blog about topics at least tangentially related to spirituality here.  Spirituality is something that gives me great joy in life.  But maybe "spiritual" is just how I want to see myself (and this blog).  Maybe a more appropriate answer would have been "lost" or "crazy".  Judging by the prosecutor's reaction to "spiritual", maybe he would have preferred "crazy".

So now I'm curious.  What's the one word that best describes you?  Does the same word best describe your blog?  And what specific techniques do you use to brand your blog?

A lot of good points here. Although a one word brand doesn't fit my blog....I'm going for authenticity and trying to keep it real. Your blog brand connects us with a philosophy of kindness and other virtues.

I like this post, it gets the old grey cells circulating! A good workout if you like, yes spiritual that's something I connect with too, but I also like the word 'ethereal', which might describe my aim to be light and airy, perhaps a little bit 'airy fairy' at times ;~)

My brand would be"ephemeral", possibly "exploratory" , definetly 'evolving"

Hello Paintdiva,
Great topic. I guess I can just take something straight out of the "About Me" section:
I look for images and words to host on my blog that communicate Beauty, Peace, Wholeness and a greater understanding of world events that call for love and compassion.
That is my "brand" if you will. Nice topic.
Peace and Light,
Noelle

I have to completely apologize for calling you by the wrong moniker. If you would be so kind as to edit that. I am at work and trying to respond to your wonderful article and just happened to look at the name above. So sorry dear!

I, too, have trouble with one word descriptions...we're all way more complex than that! As a relatively new blogger, I really need to put some thought into how I want to 'brand' my site...thanks for the impetus!

Well, this no-longer-practicing family law attorney would choose "seeker" or "learner" or "blossoming," but I like that your word was a show stopper with him. And I don't really do anything to brand my blog. I think Beth (Be Yourself, Everyone Else is Taken) is the queen of branding. Though there's a lot of variety, everything seems connected and seamless and unified.

Hi, Lola, I'm wondering if "lost" and "crazy" and "spiritual" don't all go together...I think they can. What a provocative post.

I could pick many different words to describe myself, depending upon my mood. And also upon how I'm WANTING to see myself.

Today I'm picking "Child-Like". Because that's the way I hope I am. And want to be. And maybe am...

I know little to nothing about business branding. However, I do try to brand my blog. I try to put as much of myself into it as I can. I try to make it authentic, to reek of who I am. And then it will attract certain people and not others. But eventually, over time, I'll have a diverse group of like-minded people (in some way) who will form a community.

I'm glad to have found your blog. Thank you for your comment on mine! Blessings, Olivia

Great post!
At this point of my life, I would probably pick stressed out or burn-outish. :D Writing that down sounds rather unpleasant. :D I´d love to go for "crafty" or "creative" instead.
